Backpack Buddies Mission Project – Heritage UMW
Our project began in January of 2008 after one woman in our UMW watched a news segment on a child who was laughed at in the school cafeteria for licking his plate. The teacher discovered he was going without food at home. We decided we wanted to make a difference. We began to send food home with 35 children thru the Wesley Memorial UMC and their after school program called Club Sandwich after being denied the ability to help local school children thru the public school system. We now serve 80+ children and have been able to include children in our church’s immediate community.
Last year we packed over 1500 bags!
We deliver individual units of healthy, child-friendly food every other Friday throughout the school year. We are pleased that we can reach so many children who are in need with this project. These children receive two lunches, juice, milk, two snacks, and two breakfasts that are individually wrapped, easy to open, and non-perishable. The children and the parents have been so appreciative of our help in caring for their needs. We feel blessed that we have been able to care for some of God’s children in such a simple way, and to provide for one of their most basic needs. Several national programs such as Backpack Buddies and Blessings in a Backpack have achieved much documented success in raising test scores for these children just by feeding them over the weekends when they don’t receive their normal free breakfasts and lunches at school.
How can you help??? We are always looking for shoppers, packers, and delivery persons. We have included a list of food items that could be collected and donated by your group, and monetary donations are always appreciated.
